TECH PROJECT Log 8: Reflections after the performance

It was such a nerve-wracking day, I was so so nervous particularly about forgetting my lyrics, or making a mistake, or my computer crashing or my equipment failing on me.

I wasn't having playback coming through headphones (as I'm still a newbie) so the tech guys set up an amp for foldback. This was super helpful as I could hear myself clearly rather than relying on the front of house speakers which were distant and echoey.

Luckily I had a chance to have a play around during our soundcheck and everything was working fine... except that all my MIDI mapping kept disappearing!!

I had to re-map twice in the soundcheck, and when I got on stage for the actual performance, the same thing happened - so bizarre!

A few minutes were spent re-programming my filters back into the LaunchKey while James kept the audience entertained by talking about the new Contemporary major and his experiences with live performance.

The performance itself went very smoothly, I was pretty happy with how it went. I did have a little stuff up where I triggered some of the wrong samples, however I solved this through repeating some of the lyrics... buying me time to fix my mistake immediately.

Feedback to myself for future performances:

In the future I'd still rather hear myself through headphones, so I may need to invest in a

better interface with over two outputs. Currently I have a FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 interface but this won't help as it only has two outputs.

Also, for the future I'd like to properly loop my vocals live. I had tried this, however the vocals would come through the computer with a few seconds delay, throwing me off tempo. I may need to install some kind of driver or use a better interface to prevent this from happening again.

This is why I opted for having my microphone separately connected to the PA instead of into my computer. Regarding vocal harmonies, I pre-recorded these and triggered them as a sample at various times.

Here is the livestream of the performance - find me at about 1hr 33min!! Woohoo!!
