With the video that we filmed in Week 3, we took a look at video editing software this week. Personally for me this has always been something I have had strength with; video editing was a massive hobby of mine when I was a young teenager where I made YouTube videos using Adobe Premiere Pro and Windows Movie Maker.
In class we were introduced to Adobe Premiere Rush – which I am not familiar with. Yay! I got to learn a new editing software!
The first thing we needed to do was to sync up the audio with video. This can be as easy or as hard as you make it, depending on how organised you are with your files.
Some pointers:
LABEL all files!! Very important.
Remember to say in the video “Take 1, 2” etc, which makes distinguishing/naming the files a lot easier when you reach the editing process
Clapping when rolling is important to sync audio with video
Lining up the video’s audio waveform with the audio’s audio waveform so you can visually see how they work together.
Premiere Rush (and Premiere Pro) has a feature where you can putting footage in folders (‘bins’) to organise video files. I highly recommend doing this!!
Adobe Premiere Rush is slightly less complex than Adobe Premiere Pro. For example, it doesn’t have effect automation, however Premiere Pro does have this feature.
We then discussed multi-cam editing; which means switching between different camera angles to heighten the visual experience of the performance.
James mentioned a technique that helps with multi cam editing... layer all the videos on top of each other – while carefully making sure they’re all synced together. Then, imagining you’re looking down at the timeline like a bird, and cut out sections on the top layer in order to see the lower layers.
This is actually a technique I’ve used when I edit too! It makes the editing process so much easier, rather than dragging in one individual shot one at a time.
Here's my edited video which I created in class in about 20 minutes!! The colouring is a bit funky but lets just say it was an artistic choice... hahaha! I'm pretty happy with my first attempt at using Premiere Rush :)
Something that was a challenge was that the audio seemed to only come out of the left ear - this is something that would have to be fixed in the future perhaps through panning. Futhermore, our class didn't take enough time to listen to how the vocalist's microphone sounded. The mic sensitivity was too high, and therefore we can hear a lot of vocal distortion. This is something to consider in the future.
Finally, below is a screenshot of my editing during class.
What a fun week of Tech in Music Ed !!!
