Lights… camera… action!
Our focus for this week in Tech class was filming! As a class, we worked on video, sound and lighting to capture a live musical performance of ‘Rich Girl’ by Daryl Hall & John Oates.
We broke off into four groups: the video crew, the lighting crew, the sound crew, and the performance crew.
I have had experiences with filming and sound recording in the past, so I selected the lighting crew for a challenge. The equipment was expensive so our group was careful to set up a softbox and another LED (this one was my favourite as it controlled the warmth of the light).
The performance crew featured a guitarist, a synthesizer (Arturia MiniBrute 2), vocals and an electric drumkit.
Here are some photos and video from the session!
Video above: Syncing. It was extremely important to confirm that cameras and microphones are rolling before commencing filming, in order to sync audio with video. We had multiple cameras and microphones to have as backup in case we lose any files.

Above: The softbox (left) and LED (right).

Left: an XY pair of mics to create a stereo recording.

Left: a zoom recorder, with the same XY stereo configuration.

Left: Our two cameras (Main 1 and Main 2) for different camera angles as well as for redundancy. It's better to have more video (and audio) than less, just in case we lose any files!
Our performers (below). Placing them in positions where the cameras can capture everyone clearly, with a combination of standing and seated performers to establish levels; therefore creating interest. Also, placing them in the room with a clear background to ensure no distractions.
